Hornish Jr. Edges Hemric to Claim First Mid-Ohio Victory

Sam Hornish Jr. dominated Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series Mid-Ohio Challenge, but his victory was anything but certain until the waning laps of a caution-filled race.

Hornish, driving Team Penske’s No. 22 Ford Mustang, earlier had eclipsed his own qualifying record at the 13-turn, 2.258-mile Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and edged series rookie Daniel Hemric by 1.335 seconds when the event ultimately went green for the final time with five circuits remaining in the 75-lap distance. The buzz about Richard Childress Racing returning to prominence started three years ago when Richard Childress’s grandson Austin Dillon moved up to race full-time in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, bringing the famed No. 3 back to their stable. Already, Dillon has a few career highlights, winning the pole for the Daytona 500 in his first start, making the playoffs in both his second and third year and this year, winning the historic longest race of the season, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

If Brendan Gaughan qualifies for the XFINITY Series playoff, the month of August likely will play a large part in his success.

Three of the next four XFINITY races take place on road courses, broken up only by a short-track event at Bristol. But this weekend’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International, followed by trips to Mid-Ohio (Aug. 12) and Road America (Aug. 27 after Bristol) are the events that have Gaughan’s attention.
