NASCAR found an illegally adjusted rear window in the car that created an aerodynamic advantage after Daytona 500 qualifying. Chad Knaus, Johnson’s crew chief, was suspended for the first four races and fined $25,000. Chief engineer Darian Grubb took the helm in his absence. The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will have a milestone weekend when the 2014 season takes the green flag on Sunday at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, N.C. The Whelen Season Opener 150 will launch the 10th season of competition for the Whelen Southern Modified Tour, which held its inaugural event at Caraway on March 26, 2005. George Brunnhoelzl III is a two-time winner of the Caraway opener, and will look to Sunday’s event as an opportunity to launch a potentially historic fourth consecutive championship season. Joe Gibbs Racing has signed Cody Coughlin to their driver development program.
On the drag racing circuit, the Coughlin family is well-known for collecting a number of NHRA titles and championships. Making his own mark in racing, Cody Coughlin is the first in the family to race ovals and now he’s ready for the next step in an already impressive career. Coughlin earned the JEGS/CRA All-Star Tour Championship in 2013 and 2011 along with taking the Howie Lettow Rookie of the Year honors. Continue reading
