As Tennessee faces Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway on September 10 later this season, it could be one of the biggest games ever participated in by the SEC, if not all of college football. Estimated to fill ‘The Last Great Colosseum’ all the way to the full capacity of 160,000, if not more, it will go down as the largest college football game in history. Just a couple of years before, there was talk of Florida possibly playing a game at Daytona International Speedway after finishing their renovation project.

Believe it or not, Daytona had hosted four college football games before, all by Bethune-Cookman during the 1974 and 1975 season. There hasn’t been a college game at Daytona since then. Even with the downsizing to 101,000 seats, it would still be huge for the super speedway to host a football game once again. Daytona could host Miami, Florida or Florida State in any season. Who knows, down the road they could host their own bowl game. Of course, we’ll leave the bowl naming for the later possibility.

For Super Late-Model drivers and fans, the first weekend of December is for Five Flags Speedway racing including the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby. The best Super Late-Model drivers in the country make the trek to the track in Pensacola, Florida each year in hopes of winning the most exciting, competitive and pressure-packed event of the season. And there was plenty of drama this weekend.

Last year’s Snowball Derby winner, John Hunter Nemechek was on a mission to sweep the weekend by winning both events – the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby. The first part of his plan fell into place when he won the Snowflake 100 on Saturday, but trouble in the late laps of the Snowball Derby ended his hopes when his car went up in flames. Two crew members had injuries, with one treated in the infield care center and the other sent to the hospital for further evaluation. Both were in good spirits according to NEMCO Motorsports. There’s some NASCAR history behind JD Motorsports with Gary Keller and as happens so often, that history is an interesting part of their NASCAR inter-woven fabric that has led them to what the organization is today.

This season, the organization has fielded three cars, the No. 01 with Landon Cassill, the No. 4 with Ross Chastain and the No. 0 with Harrison Rhodes. Other drivers behind the wheel of their cars this season include, ARCA Racing Series veteran Bobby Gerhart, a former K&N West winning driver, Michael Self, and GTS Champion Lawson Aschenbach.

However, it is co-owner and founder Johnny Davis, as in the ‘JD’ in JD Motorsports with Gary Keller with an interesting story behind their organization as they head into the last race of their 2015 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (Sunday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. ET on NBC)

Driver
The first to the finish line among the Championship 4 – Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. – will win the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver championship.

Owner
The same rule applies to the owner championship, which involves the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet. Continue reading →

Earnhardt Wins at Phoenix: Harvick, Busch, Truex Join Gordon in Champion 4

A serendipitous sequence of pit stops and a drizzle that turned into a downpour made a winner of Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Sunday night’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Raceway, with a delayed start moving the race from daytime to under the lights by rain in the afternoon.

But again, halting the race due to rain 93 laps short of its scheduled distance of 312 laps was hardly the satisfying conclusion Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch or Joey Logano had hoped for.

Eliminating those four drivers from the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup was disappointing, while defending champion Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. joined Jeff Gordon in next Sunday’s Championship Round at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Continue reading →
